Research Description

Research explores the metabolic basis of cardiac dysfunction in heart disease. Focus is on metabolic flux regulation via enzyme expression using a novel combination of molecular techniques and magnetic resonance spectroscopy of the intact heart. Gene therapy, through the in vivo delivery of cardiac-specific, adenoviral constructs, enables the manipulation of enzyme expression and activity in animal models of heart disease. The program develops new methods for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to detect intracellular transport rates and chemical reactions in intact, functioning tissues using new approaches for stable isotope kinetics in whole organs.
